Jony Ive on “Desert Island Discs”

Jony Ive I and share a disdain for lentils:

I hate lentils. I hated them [as a child] and I hate them even more now...[they] were always available in enormous volume which was ominous

He says he remembers gluing lentils to paper as a child. And the realization hit him that lentils belonged better in glue on paper than in his tummy — I couldn’t agree more!!

Ive also discusses the idea of encountering an object and being able to get a sense for the people who made it. Here he is talking about the first time he came across a Mac:

I was shocked that I had a sense for the people who made it. They could’ve been in the room. You really had a sense of what was on their minds, and their values, and their joy and exuberance in making something that they knew was helpful. It reminded me of how important design was.

I love software that lets you feel the values of the people who made it (rather than value its trying to capture).

You have to value the work, or the work will not be a value.
